Business Pulse results: Boss makes too much money

Memphis Business Journal - by Einat Paz-Frankel Staff writer

More than half of the respondents to an online survey say executive compensation is excessive.

Memphis Business Journal asked its online readers if executives are making too much money following reports in the national media about outrageous, unwarranted executive compensation.

53 percent of the 181 respondents think executive compensation is excessive; 35 percent say it's warranted; and 12 percent were undecided.

Participants who left comments were those who chose to explain why they think high executive compensation is justified:

  • "If they perform, give them the compensation. No company should reward incompetence."
  • "Depends on performance, but the CEO directs the creation or destruction of tremendous shareholder value. They built the company, so they should reap the benefits."
  • "Whoever takes the business risks warrants the compensation."
